House of the Dragon episode 10: this scene with Aemond and Vhagar is different from the novel

Season 1 of “House of the Dragon” ended on Monday, October 24 with the broadcast of episode 10. One sequence in particular shocked viewers. It is, however, very different from George RR Martin’s novel. Attention ! This article contains SPOILERS for the final episode of “House of the Dragon”!

House of the Dragon: end of season 1

After more than two months spent in the company of the Targaryens, the time has come to leave them. Indeed, season 1 of House of the Dragon ended this Monday, October 24 with episode 10 living up to fan expectations.

After the death of Viserys at the end of episode 8 and a misunderstanding that led Alicent to believe that the latter had finally designated their son Aegon as heir, the coronation took place during episode 9. A pivotal moment in the dragon dance. It was at the beginning of episode 10 that Rhaenyra and her husband Daemon not only learned of the disappearance of Viserys but also the coronation of Aegon from the mouth of Rhaenys.

Rather than start a war on the spot, Rhaenyra preferred to gather her advisers around the table. to assess their options. She ultimately chose to send her messengers to all corners of the Kingdom to ensure that the Houses that had sworn allegiance to her when Viserys named her as heiress were still loyal to her. Among his messengers were his two sons from his first marriage, Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon. The latter is sent to Storm’s End with Lord Borros Baratheon on the back of his dragon Arrax.

A shock sequence

As he thinks the task easy, he sees the huge dragon Vhagar in the courtyard of the fortress. His uncle Aemond, the brother and support of King Aegon, is already there, in order to negotiate with the Baratheon. An argument breaks out between Lucerys and Aemond, the latter still claiming that Lucerys pays for gouging out his eye. Under the orders of Lord Borros, the two young men leave Storm’s End. But Aemond chases him through the airwith Vhagar, terrifying Lucerys who rides a dragon five times smaller.

With no chance against Vhagar, Arrax disobeys his Dragon Rider and fires at the huge beast, triggering fury of it. Despite Aemond’s orders, Vhagar makes short work of Arrax and Lucerys, under his dumbfounded gaze.

In volume 2 of Fire and Blood written by George RR Martin, from which is taken House of the Dragonthis duel is also the event that triggers for good dragon dance. However, in the novel, we understand that Aemond wanted to kill Lucerys, that it was not accidental. Asked about this by Variety, the showrunner of the series Ryan Condal wanted to explain:

Historians have concluded that Aemond wanted to kill Luke, but I don’t think any of them could have known what was going on in his head at the time (…) it brings complexity and the nuance to the character (…) that’s what interests me.

Accident or not, Lucerys’ death sparked a fury never before seen in Rhaenyra. The final shot on his look says a lot about his determination to wipe out The Greens.
